Progress serves as the first "real" release by High Five Spaceship in its current form. Highly collaborative, nearly every track involves at least one performer other than Chris Bingham; the contributions of Corinna Jane, Carlos Montero, Daniel Dobbs, and Jack Morris are heavy. The track Disrepair features the vocals of Jennifer Bingham - Chris' sister - and Home features violin by Steve Bingham, Chris' father.
Progress was initially conceived as a concept album with an overarching story - featuring a man with a tree growing from a hole in his torso - but this concept was abandoned early on to give the collaborators more room to flex their creativity. Echoes of this concept do come through, however, especially in the track Home, which also happens to be semi-autobiographical.
This album was the first HFS project given a physical release; while the album could be downloaded as a digital mp3, it was also given a limited CD and vinyl release. The CD release featured a jewel case, 12-page full-color booklet with lyrics, and a separate disc with 3 remastered tracks (Spectacles and Disasters from The Organic, Haunted Houses, and Trolls) and two audio notes on the creation of Cheap Divorce and Death is Alive. The vinyl release, limited to 300 copies, was hand-numbered and included a lyric sheet and exclusive letter.
